My work with the adult community has seen significant growth and effectiveness through the power of collaboration with colleagues. The development of these working relationships and our joint efforts on projects, such as concerts and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D.E.I.) programming, have not only improved my current work but also enriched my personal and professional growth.
Some of the concert performance highlights included the Stevie Wonder Program and Classes, a combined performance by the orchestra and choir of Les Miserables, a Chuck Berry & Early Rock show, the 80’s Show, and a show featuring the music of Prince with the school’s Rock Orchestra and Vocal Rock Studio. These collaborations have allowed me to share my expertise and experience while learning from my colleagues. Working with other music teachers and diversity practitioners has been crucial in creating a broader and more enriching musical experience for our students.
One of the most impactful experiences was gaining a broader understanding of how musicians use popular music to not only entertain but also to highlight indifference toward marginalized groups. These collaborations have been instrumental in bringing attention to voices and personalities forgotten in our recent musical history, inspiring us to continue our efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion through our work.
By embracing these principles and building on these experiences, we can collectively create a workplace where mutual respect and productive relationships flourish, leading to a more fulfilling and successful professional environment.
